OBITUARIES

Bella Abzug

Feminist, social justice activist, and former U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug died March 31 at the age of 77, due to complications resulting from recent heart surgery.

Among her many achievements, Abzug was the first Jewish woman elected to Congress. She was active in the civil rights movement as early as the 1940s, stood up to Sen. Joseph McCarthy's "red" hunts, and fiercely advocated for the rights of women, lesbians and gays.

As a Democratic member of Congress from New York in 1975, Abzug introduced a bill to extend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to lesbians and gays. The measure, the first of its kind, would have outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

"Bella Abzug was light years ahead of her time when it came to advocating for lesbian and gay equality,” said Human Rights Campaign director Elizabeth Birch. "She laid the groundwork for what has become the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a bill to outlaw job discrimination based on sexual orientation."

A pioneer in the contemporary feminist movement, Abzug first ran for Congress in 1970 with the campaign slogan “A woman's place is in the house-the House of Representatives." She served in Congress from 1971 to 1977. Her aggressive style won her many supporters and admirers, but was also used by

detractors to turn her into a caricature of the feminist movement.

Abzug ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1976 and for New York City mayor in 1977.

As a young lawyer, Abzug defended civil rights cases in the 1960s and was active in the anti-war group Women Strike for Peace.

Abzug was noted for wearing largebrimmed hats. She later explained that she wore the hats because as a young law school graduate, she was often mistaken for a court reporter or clerk. Once she began wearing the hats, which were seen as a sign of authority and power, people began taking her more seriously:

Recently, Abzug became an advocate for women's health care and headed the Women's Environment and Development Organization, a global network of activists formed in 1990. Abzug was a widow who lived in Greenwich Village. She is survived by two daugh-Eric Resnick
